Show Synopsis

The Importance of Being Earnest is a play by Oscar Wilde, first performed in 1895. The play tells the story of two men, Jack Worthing (called Ernest in our script) and Algernon Moncrieff, who both assume the identity of a fictional man named Ernest, leading them both to fall in love and find an assortment of problems along the way.

Important Notes from Sam:
  • This production of the show has a bit of a different lens. In most productions Ernest or Jack, as he is often referred to, is simply employing the use of a different name as a way to get out of the country. For the purposes of this production, we propose instead that Ernest is also a trans man and is coming to terms with how to put that into words through the use of his name. If you are non-binary, trans masc, or a trans man you are highly encouraged to audition for our titular character, however there will be allusions to his life pre-transition.
  • Because of the highlight placed on trans identity in this performance, no characters will be genderbent so for your own comfort, only audition for the characters you’d be comfortable playing in their current gender.
  • If there is a monologue that you have found from the show that appeals to you more than this selection feel free to use it.
